Aim and Scope

ECOSISTEMAS publishes experimental, theoretical, and descriptive works on ecology and the environment in a broad sense. Articles focused on different scales (e.g. organisms, populations, communities, or ecosystems), with different approaches (e.g. paleoecology, ecophysiology, functional ecology, conservation ecology, or eco-evolution), and in different environments are welcome (e.g. Terrestrial, aquatic, etc.). ECOSISTEMAS also covers meta-science (science about how we do science) on ecology.

Research articles, reviews, and data articles on ecological research, from organisms to ecosystems, as well as works that express emerging ideas and concepts with a solid scientific basis, which have passed the peer review process, are accepted. Regular articles are accepted in both Spanish and English.

ECOSISTEMAS also publishes special issues or monographs and notes in Spanish on topics of interest in ecology.

CC-BYECOSISTEMAS is published and read free of charge, thanks to the AEET's commitment to the principle of open science.

About

ECOSISTEMAS is a peer-reviewed and open-access journal edited by the Spanish Association of Terrestrial Ecology (AEET) with an international vocation that publishes three issues a year, although the publication of articles is continuous through the “upcoming articles” section. This journal provides immediate free access to its content under the principle of open science. Its objective is that any reader has free access from the first moment to the knowledge generated through the journal.

ECOSISTEMAS is financed by the AEET and does not charge any fee or cost to the authors for the management or publication of their contributions.

ECOSISTEMAS began to be published in 1992 in printed format and since 2001 it has been continuously published in electronic format by issues every four months.

Peer Review Process

ECOSISTEMAS is a peer-reviewed journal, which offers authors two types of review: blinded, where the identity of the authors is known, and double-blinded, where both the identity of the authors and reviewers is unknown. Once the manuscript is registered on the editorial management platform, the following process will be followed:

- The editor-in-chief carries out a first evaluation of the files sent. If the topic and treatment are considered potentially suitable for the journal, the manuscript is assigned to an associate/guest editor based on the thematic area of the contribution.

- The associate/guest editor manages and supervises the review process. He/she assigns the manuscript to at least two independent reviewers. Once they have agreed to carry out the review, the reviewers will have access to the original document and supplementary material and will carry out their evaluation.

- Once the reviewers' reports have been received, and based on them, the associate/guest editor makes a provisional decision and informs the author of the manuscript about the decision. Before accepting/rejecting the contribution, the editor may request minor or major corrections.

- To determine the final decision, the associate editor directly recommends the acceptance or rejection of the corrected version of the manuscript for publication. The editor-in-chief may ratify the decision or request additional corrections.

The average evaluation time for articles is 60 days, counting from the date of confirmation of receipt of the same. Once the evaluation process is completed, the journal's Editorial Team notifies the corresponding author, by email, of the acceptance or rejection of the works to the authors and informs them of the tentative publication date.

Reviewers recognition

The work of the reviewers is essential to guarantee the integrity and quality of the scientific publication. At ECOSISTEMAS we are aware of the effort involved in the review work and that is why we have chosen to recognize the work of reviewers in various ways. On the one hand, ECOSISTEMAS is very grateful for their time and dedication, and recognizes their work by periodically publishing their names. On the other hand, reviewers can request certification and inclusion of all reviews for ECOSISTEMAS in their personal profiles on the Web of Science platform through CLARIVATE. Finally, since 2012 the journal has awarded an annual prize to the best ECOSISTEMAS reviewer using the statistics recorded on the OJS manuscript submission platform.

Instructions for reviewers can be found here.

Good Editorial Practices

ECOSISTEMAS has its own Good Editorial Practice Guide framed in different national and international guidelines on good editorial practices such as those of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics), EASE (European Association of Science Editors), and the CSIC, among others. This guide aims to constitute a code of conduct aimed at the parties involved in the management and publication of scientific results in the journal ECOSISTEMAS: editorial team, authors, and reviewers of the works.

Furthermore, at ECOSISTEMAS we promote equality in gender issues both in the composition of the editorial team and the advisory board, as well as in the selection of reviewers. There is no discrimination in the management of manuscripts due to the gender or origin of the authors. The journal follows the AEET Code of Conduct which values and encourages equality and diversity.
